The painter, Joseph Mallord William Turner, pretended having been tied to the mast of a steamboat for 4 hours during a storm to experience the feeling of it.
Finished in 1842, the painting inspired the Impressionists 30 years later.
Currently in the collection of the Tate Britain in London.
